1.4 To aid comparisons, expenditure on healthcare in the UK is expressed as a percentage of UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measured at current prices.

1.5 Figure 1.2 shows expenditure on healthcare in the UK as defined by OECD. In 2009 this figure was 9.8 percent of GDP.

1.6 It should be noted that although current price expenditure on healthcare continued to rise by 7.5 per cent between 2008 and 2009, UK GDP in current prices fell by 3.7 per cent in the same period.

1.7 This has led to an unusually large increase in healthcare expenditure as a percentage of GDP between 2008 and 2009. For a more detailed breakdown of these figures, see Annex A.
